The crowd surged like a swarm of ants, dense and packed, shoulder to shoulder, every face bearing the same expression: a weary hunger suspended somewhere between greed and boredom. The air was thick, viscous, like a soup boiled too long — the salt of sweat, the cloy of perfume, the scorched-oil reek of grilled sausages, and something else, something nameless that rose from cheap plastic and shoddy fabric, a chemical miasma that swirled together and settled heavy in every lung.
