A beggar, starved three days straight, could have choked down a whole packet and felt nothing in his belly but a deeper, colder acid. Nor did they warm. Clench a piece in your fist in winter's grip, and it gave no more heat than a dead coal. Let it melt beneath your tongue, and its shallow sweetness cheated the senses—a fleeting comfort that stole the last warmth from your flesh and fled the faster for the lie. They left no mark. No soul remembered a sugar's name, nor thought back, ten years on, to the taste of some sweet on some faded afternoon.
