His hands were steeped in sugar water day after day, the skin puckered and cracked like the bark of an ancient tree, the nail beds stained with a grime that no scrubbing could ever reach, as though the syrup had seeped into the marrow of his bones, until it was no longer clear where the sugar ended and the man began.
