He clutched the jar to his chest and sprinted for the rice shop, the banknotes inside rattling like dry leaves in a gale; the wind bit through his open collar, stinging his chest, yet he fancied a flicker of false warmth in that pain—as if the paper might still hold up the last shred of his dignity.
