Their true purpose was to make a pilgrimage to that face. A copper coin dropped, yet their gazes remained nailed to her lips — those two arcs of vermilion, exquisite and cruel. Unlike the innocent flesh of a melon, they were like wounds still steaming from a freshly slaughtered creature on a snowy field; like poisonous petals that, with a single glance, promise a delirium from which one never wakes. To behold them was to feel an unquenchable thirst rise in the throat, one that no amount of sugar could ever soothe. They bought her candy, but what their hearts hungered for was another kind of sweetness — a sweetness that could burn a person alive.
